# How to Read a Zi Wei Dou Shu Chart With a Worked Example

# How to Read a Zi Wei Dou Shu Chart

To read a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart, find the Life Palace, identify its major stars, and then read it together with the Wealth, Career, and Travel palaces. Check the Four Transformations after you understand those placements. An uncertain birth hour can change the Life Palace and its stars, so check that input before reading their meanings.

We checked the placements below using one fictional chart, 15 June 1990, male, Si hour, 9 am to 11 am. You can open the [complete sample reading](/en/ziwei/sample?from=ziwei-article) beside it. The palace names and star placements below come from the same calculator used for that sample. The meanings follow traditional reading conventions. You can compare them with experience without assuming that the chart predicts events.

## Check the birth details before reading the stars

Start with the date, the calendar used, and the birth-hour window. A lunar date entered as a Gregorian date produces a different calculation. A time remembered as “around eleven” may fall on either side of the Si/Wu boundary. Those are input questions to settle before attaching a personality description to the result.

The kaucim.ai tool accepts a Gregorian date and a clock-time window. It does not automatically correct the time for birthplace longitude, true solar time, historical time zones, or daylight saving. If a recorded time needs a correction, verify that correction before selecting the window. A different calculator may make some of these adjustments automatically, which is one reason apparently identical birthdays can produce different charts.

For births near midnight, early Zi is midnight to 1 am and late Zi is 11 pm to midnight. Enter the civil date on which the birth occurred. Our Zi Wei calculation follows the San He convention without moving late Zi into the following date. Other tools may apply a different day boundary. Compare their settings before deciding that either chart is wrong.

## Start with the Life Palace

The Life Palace is labelled 命宮, Ming Gong. Some English tools call it the Soul Palace. It is the starting point for the person's overall disposition in a traditional reading. The name Zi Wei refers to the system; use the Life Palace label to find where your reading starts.

In our Si-hour example, the Life Palace is at Chou, 丑, and contains Tai Yang, 太陽, and Tai Yin, 太陰. These are conventionally called the Sun and Moon stars. Write down those two names before reading their descriptions. Otherwise it is easy to read about a star you recognise while overlooking where it actually appears.

The Earthly Branch label identifies a position in the chart. A twelve-palace chart contains all twelve branch positions. Keep these position labels separate from the birth-year animal.

Tai Yang is commonly associated with outward expression and giving, while Tai Yin is associated with reflection and attention to detail. Read the two themes together, then compare them with situations you recognise in your own life.

## Keep the twelve palace names beside the chart

The palaces identify areas of life. A star's meaning changes with its location and surrounding relationships, so “I have Tian Liang” is an incomplete observation. “Tian Liang is in the Career Palace” gives the reading a subject.

English labels vary between tools. Keep the Chinese term next to the translation when comparing charts, especially for Soul/Life and Wellbeing/Fortune. The diagram may also be square or circular. The palace relationships matter more than the shape of the display.

A single person's Spouse Palace describes one part of that person's chart. It does not establish another person's character, appearance, fidelity, or consent. A [two-chart compatibility reading](/en/articles/chinese-astrology-compatibility-two-birth-charts) uses two sets of birth details.

## Read the Body Palace as an additional marker

The Body Palace, 身宮 or Shen Gong, shares one of the twelve palaces. Traditional readers use it as an additional emphasis when considering how a person acts and where life experience draws their attention. Record both positions; the Body marker adds to what you have read in the Life Palace.

In the sample, the Body Palace is at Hai, 亥, in the Spouse Palace. A traditional reading would give additional attention to involvement in close relationships. Whether or when the person marries remains outside what this placement can establish.

For a first pass, record where the Body marker appears, then return to the Life Palace. Trying to combine every layer immediately makes it difficult to tell which observation supports which conclusion.

## An empty palace still has a context

“Empty palace” usually means a palace with none of the fourteen major stars. There may still be supporting stars, transformation relationships, and timing information to read. An empty Wealth Palace does not mean no money; an empty Spouse Palace does not mean no relationship.

Our sample's Wealth Palace at You, 酉, has no major stars. Its opposite palace, Wellbeing at Mao, 卯, contains Tian Ji and Ju Men. A common reading method consults the opposite palace while keeping the original palace's subject in view. This is sometimes described as borrowing the opposite stars. Keep each palace in its original position when making that comparison.

## Add San Fang Si Zheng before drawing a conclusion

San Fang Si Zheng, 三方四正, reads a palace with its two trine positions and its opposite. For the Life Palace, the related set is Life, Wealth, Career, and Travel. This gives a reading more context than a description of one main star.

The fictional Si-hour chart gives the following placements.

Those are calculated placements. A possible reading might explore the relationship between self-expression, responsibility at work, and the way resources are managed. The useful next question is whether those themes describe observable habits. The chart alone cannot establish a job outcome, income level, or suitable investment.

## Read the Four Transformations with their stars and palaces

The Four Transformations are Hua Lu, 化祿; Hua Quan, 化權; Hua Ke, 化科; and Hua Ji, 化忌. They attach to designated stars according to a stem-based table. The [iztro explanation of transformations](https://iztro.com/learn/mutagen) describes the distinction between natal, timing, and palace-based layers.

Begin with the natal layer. In this example, our calculator returns Tai Yang with Lu in the Life Palace, Wu Qu with Quan in Siblings, Tai Yin with Ke in Life, and Tian Tong with Ji in Spouse. Look for those labels on the corresponding stars before reading a meaning into them.

A conventional introduction associates Lu with gain or increased resources, Quan with agency and responsibility, Ke with recognition, and Ji with tension or persistent concern. These are broad interpretive categories. Ji in the Spouse Palace is not proof of a failed relationship, just as Lu in the Life Palace is not a promise of wealth.

Keep the layer explicit when comparing charts. A natal transformation and an annual transformation need not sit on the same star. Different school tables can also disagree. Check which table and year are being displayed rather than treating every coloured label as part of the same calculation.

## What if the birth hour is unknown?

An unknown hour leaves an unresolved input in the Zi Wei calculation. The tool can provide a reference layout, but that does not identify your personal Life Palace or Body Palace. BaZi can retain the date-based pillars while omitting the Hour Pillar; a full Zi Wei layout cannot be confirmed from those date-based facts alone.

Change only the fictional sample's hour from Si, 9 am to 11 am, to Wu, 11 am to 1 pm. The Life Palace moves from Chou to Zi, and its main stars change from Tai Yang/Tai Yin to Wu Qu/Tian Fu. When the hour is entirely unknown, kaucim.ai uses a reference Wu-hour layout and marks it uncertain. A reliable birth record or remembered time window can narrow the input. Choosing the description that sounds most appealing cannot verify your birth hour.

## Keep calculation, interpretation, and evidence separate

The worked placements were checked on 5 September 2026 with iztro 2.5.8; the accompanying BaZi calculation uses lunar-typescript 1.8.6. The sample page recomputes its chart with the site's installed libraries. If its placements change after a rule update, the written walkthrough needs review too.

Repeatable calculation means the same inputs and rules produce the same chart. It does not demonstrate that the interpretation predicts a person's future. This guide treats Zi Wei as a cultural practice and a way to examine patterns, with room to disagree with the reading.
