Guan Yin lot 21

Dragon and Phoenix Matched · Li Dan's dragon-and-phoenix match

上籤Upper Lot in the Hong Kong text

繁體中文

In one line

This is the marriage lot of the set. It frames a match as something you meet, and its last two lines are about timing and continuation.

The verse, line by line

  1. 陰陽道合總由天

Yin and yang joining is decided by heaven.

  2. 女嫁男婚豈偶然

A woman marries, a man weds: how could it be chance?

  3. 但見龍蛇相會合

Only when dragon and snake come together,

  4. 熊羆入夢喜團圓

and the bear enters the dream, does the glad reunion come.

The Chinese is the Hong Kong published text. The English is a plain rendering written by kaucim.ai to carry the sense of each line; it is not an official or literary translation, and a classical verse supports more than one reading.

3但見龍蛇相會合但看龍蛇堪運動
4熊羆入夢喜團圓熊羆叶夢喜團圓

The Hong Kong and Taiwan texts differ in five characters, concentrated in lines 3 and 4. Line 3 reads 但見...相會合 in the Hong Kong text and 但看...堪運動 in the Taiwan text; line 4 reads 熊羆入夢 in Hong Kong and 熊羆叶夢 in Taiwan. Check your slip against both before reading the third line as a timing claim.

Compare the line on your own slip before applying a reading. Lot numbers match across the two traditions; individual characters do not always.

Li Dan's dragon-and-phoenix match

Li Dan is the future Emperor Ruizong of the Tang, and the episode behind the lot is the one in which his marriage is arranged across a gap in station, the "dragon and phoenix" pairing of the title. Lot books attach it here because the story is about a match that looked improbable from the outside and held.

The fourth line uses an image from the Book of Songs. Dreaming of a bear was the classical omen of a son, dreaming of a snake the omen of a daughter, so "the bear enters the dream" carried a specific meaning to a reader four hundred years ago. We keep it on the page because it is in the source text, and we do not treat it as a prediction about anyone's children.

Traditional palace assignment: Chen palace (宮位), one of the twelve branch positions the old lot books use to file each verse.

Reading lot 21

The first two lines say that pairing is not accidental. Read at face value that is a statement about fate, and it is worth being plain about the limit: a four-line verse cannot tell you whether a particular person is willing, and nothing here reports the other party's intentions.

What the lot is more useful for is its third line, which makes the good outcome conditional on a meeting. Dragon and snake are two of the twelve branches again, and the line places the resolution at the point where two things come together, never at the point where one of them tries harder. If you drew this about someone you have not spoken to, the verse does not supply their answer. If you drew it about a relationship already in motion, it points at whether the two sides are actually converging on the same plan.

Five characters in this lot differ between the two published traditions, all of them in the last two lines, so the version on your slip may read slightly differently from the version here.

A verse can give you a frame for thinking about a situation. It cannot report what another person has decided, and it cannot confirm that a particular event will happen.

Questions about lot 21

What does Guan Yin lot 21 mean for marriage?

It is the set's marriage lot, graded an Upper Lot, and it frames a match as something you meet. Its third line makes the favourable reading conditional on two sides actually converging, which is the part worth checking against your situation.

What does "the bear enters the dream" mean?

It is an image from the Book of Songs, where dreaming of a bear was read as an omen of a son and dreaming of a snake as an omen of a daughter. It is preserved here because it is in the source verse; we do not treat it as a prediction.

Does lot 21 tell me if someone likes me?

No. The verse describes the shape of a match. One person's intentions sit outside it, and no reading of it can report what another person has decided. If you have not asked them, the lot does not stand in for asking.
