Story

Sima Xiangru Writes on the Bridge

This sign tells the story of Sima Xiangru, one of China's greatest poets from the Han Dynasty (around 140 BC). Born into poverty, he spent years studying literature while dreaming of court recognition. The "bridge writing" refers to a romantic legend where he carved a pledge on a bridge, promising his beloved Zhuo Wenjun that he would return successful and wealthy. In reality, Sima Xiangru eloped with this merchant's daughter, scandalizing society. They ran a wine shop together until his literary talents eventually caught Emperor Wu's attention. His famous rhapsodies earned him a position at court, transforming him from a struggling poet into one of history's most celebrated writers. The story became a symbol of how persistent effort, even through hardship and social disapproval, can eventually lead to recognition.
