Story

Lord Mengchang

Lord Mengchang was a nobleman during China's Warring States period (around 300 BCE) famous for keeping over 3,000 retainers at his estate. These weren't servants but scholars, warriors, craftsmen, and even lowly thieves — anyone with useful skills. The story goes that one guest complained about being overlooked despite his talents. Mengchang's advisors wanted to dismiss him for his boldness, but Mengchang recognized the man's courage and promoted him instead. This guest later saved Mengchang's life during a dangerous political mission. The tale became a classic example of recognizing hidden talent and the wisdom of surrounding yourself with diverse perspectives, even when they challenge you.
