What Is the Day Master in BaZi?
The Day Master (日主, also written 日元 or 日干) is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar in a BaZi chart. It represents the person, and it is the reference point from which everything else in the chart is measured: the Ten Gods are derived by comparing each other stem with it, and the chart's strength or weakness is judged relative to it. There are ten possible Day Masters, one for each pairing of the five elements with yin or yang. A Day Master is a calculation reference, not a complete personality type.

The classical images are the register BaZi texts use to characterise each stem; they are a starting vocabulary, not a verdict. Two people with a 甲 Day Master can run very differently depending on whether the other seven characters feed the tree or cut it.
How the Day Master is found
- Take the civil date of birth. Days carry stem-branch pairs in an unbroken sixty-day cycle that has run since antiquity, so the day pillar is a lookup, not a calculation from the year or month.
- The day changes at midnight. A birth at 00:30 belongs to the new date; a birth at 23:30 belongs to the old date on kaucim.ai (the San He late-Zi rule), while some calculators roll a 23:00 to 24:00 birth onto the next day. That is the one convention that can change a Day Master between tools.
- The upper character of that pair is the Day Master. Its element and polarity are fixed by the table above.
Because the day pillar depends on the date and nothing else, an unknown birth hour does not remove the Day Master. It removes the hour pillar and reduces the chart from eight characters to six.
What the Day Master is used for
- Deriving the Ten Gods
- Every other stem, visible or hidden inside a branch, is labelled by its relationship to the Day Master: same element, what it produces, what it controls, what controls it, what produces it, each split by polarity. The Ten Gods page has the full derivation table.
- Judging strength
- A Day Master is strong when the month branch is its own season or the season that produces it, when it has roots in the branches, and when the other stems support it. It is weak when the season drains or controls it and little supports it. Strength decides which elements help.
- Choosing the useful element (用神)
- A weak Day Master wants what produces or matches it; a strong one wants what drains or controls it. This is the step interpretation builds on, and it is where readers disagree most.
- Reading luck pillars
- Each ten-year luck pillar is read as an element arriving to support or press the Day Master, which is how the same chart reads differently at different ages.
Worked example
Birth: 6 February 1995, 15:00 to 17:00 (Shen hour), male. The pillars are 乙亥 year, 戊寅 month, 戊辰 day, 庚申 hour. The day pillar is 戊辰, so the Day Master is 戊 Wu, Yang Earth. The month branch is 寅, early spring, when Wood is in season; Wood controls Earth, so the season presses the Day Master rather than feeding it. The month stem 戊 is a second Earth beside it, the year stem 乙 is Wood acting on it, and the hour stem 庚 is Metal that Earth produces. A reader would call this Day Master under pressure with some peer support, and would look to Fire (which produces Earth) as the element that helps.
Where calculators differ
- Late Zi rule. A 23:00 to 24:00 birth stays on the same date on kaucim.ai; other tools move it to the next day, which changes the Day Master. Check this first if two calculators disagree.
- True solar time. A clock time near midnight can cross the date boundary once longitude and daylight saving are corrected. See true solar time.
- Naming. English tools write Day Master, Day Lord, Self Element, or Daymaster. All mean the day stem.
Common mistakes
- Reading the Day Master as a personality type on its own. The same stem reads differently in every season and with every set of companions.
- Confusing it with the year stem or the zodiac animal. The year pillar describes origins and the wider generation; the Day Master describes the person.
- Assuming a strong Day Master is better. Strength only decides which elements help; a strong chart needs an outlet, a weak one needs support.
- Counting the Day Master among the Ten Gods. It is the reference the Ten Gods are measured from.
Questions people ask
How do I find my Day Master?
Cast the four pillars from your birth date and read the upper character of the day pillar. The free BaZi calculator prints it as the first line of the chart.
Can my Day Master change?
No. It is fixed by the birth date. The only way two calculators show different Day Masters is a different date-boundary rule for births near midnight.
What is the difference between Day Master and Day Pillar?
The day pillar is the whole stem-branch pair for the birth day, for example 戊辰. The Day Master is its upper character, 戊. The lower character, the day branch, is often read as the spouse position.
Is the Day Master the same as my feng shui element?
Usually not. "Feng shui element" can mean the zodiac-year element, the Kua number element from year and gender, or the Day Master. Only the last one is the BaZi centre.
