Finding Help While Seeking Water · Liu Chen meets the immortals
A difficult search changes when another person enters it. This lot asks whether you are trying to solve everything alone.
The sources differ in the tool used to dig and, more substantially, in the last word of line two. Hong Kong prints 得最難, stressing difficulty; Taiwan prints 得最先, putting the effort first. The English rendering follows Hong Kong. Both sources grade the lot Middle.
The traditional title names Liu Chen, whose mountain journey leads to an encounter with immortals. The verse gives that encounter a practical shape through 知己, a person who knows or understands you.
Its opening image is deliberately awkward. An awl is a narrow tool for a large task such as finding water. The Hong Kong wording makes the difficulty explicit. Taiwan uses a hoe in the first line and changes the final word of line two from 難, difficult, to 先, first.
Read the first half before you seize on the happy ending. What method are you using, and is it suited to the task? Repeating an ineffective approach can consume effort without bringing you closer to an answer.
The second half introduces cooperation. For a work problem, this may prompt you to ask someone with the relevant knowledge to review what you have tried. For a relationship question, it asks whether the conversation contains real understanding on both sides. These are applications of the imagery, not predictions of an approaching helper.
If your slip has the Taiwan wording, the second line gives effort a more encouraging place. The two versions still meet in the last two lines, where progress happens together.
