The day's stem becomes your Day Master, the reference point everything else is read against: which of the five elements support it, which drain it, and how that balance shifts across your luck cycles. Nothing is guessed. The eight characters are fixed by your birth moment, and the reading works from there.

Four pillars, one for each unit of your birth time: the year pillar for roots and early environment, the month pillar for drive and career, the day pillar for you and your closest relationships, and the hour pillar for later years and what you build. Each pillar carries one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch, eight characters in total, which is what 八字 literally means.
