Full readingLord Cho was presented a box of tangerine.
He found in it nothing but fruit skin.
In his anger, he promptly drew his sword.
Disguised as a sheep the giver escaped from his blow.
This story features Zuo Ci, a legendary Taoist magician during China's Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD), and the warlord Cao Cao. Zuo Ci was famous for his supernatural abilities and his tendency to mock powerful figures through elaborate tricks. In this tale, he presents Cao Cao with what appears to be a gift of premium tangerines.
When Cao Cao opens the box expecting delicious fruit, he finds only empty peels - the meat has vanished. Furious at being made a fool, Cao Cao draws his sword to strike down the trickster. But Zuo Ci, using his shape-shifting powers, transforms into a sheep and disappears into a flock, leaving Cao Cao swinging at nothing.
The story represents the theme of appearances versus reality, and how our expectations can blind us to what's actually happening.
Your career situation right now mirrors Cao Cao's frustration with those empty tangerine peels. You're probably dealing with promises that turned out hollow, opportunities that looked golden but delivered nothing substantial, or colleagues who've left you holding an empty bag. Maybe that promotion came with no real authority, that new client promised big budgets but pays poorly, or that exciting project turned into busywork.
The anger is understandable - nobody likes being played for a fool. Here's what we think this sign is really getting at: you're so focused on being deceived that you're missing the bigger picture. Cao Cao was a brilliant military strategist, but in this moment he let emotion cloud his judgment.
He swung wildly at sheep instead of asking why Zuo Ci felt the need to teach him this lesson in the first place. In your career, someone or something is showing you that your expectations might be unrealistic. That 'perfect' opportunity you're chasing might be the tangerine box - beautiful packaging, empty contents.
The sign suggests you're operating with incomplete information or wishful thinking about how your industry actually works.
Stop chasing what you think you deserve and start observing what's actually available. Spend this week documenting what you do versus what you expected to be doing six months ago. Talk to three people who've been in your field longer - ask them about their biggest career disappointments and what they learned.
Most importantly, resist the urge to make dramatic moves when you feel deceived. That sword-swinging energy needs to be redirected into research and patience.
