Our spring gowns are full of joyful colour.
Hand in hand we go hiking in this charming season.
We sing, we dance, and enjoy our witty conversation.
This sign recalls Zeng Dian, a philosopher from ancient China who lived around 500 BCE. When Confucius asked his students about their life ambitions, most spoke of achieving political power or military glory. Zeng Dian's answer was different — he dreamed of a simple spring day spent with friends, making music, wearing fresh clothes, and enjoying nature together.
Confucius praised this vision above all others. Why? Because Zeng Dian understood that true fulfillment comes from harmony — with friends, with seasons, with the simple pleasures of being alive.
His story became a symbol of finding joy in the present moment rather than chasing distant achievements. In Chinese culture, this represents the highest form of wisdom: knowing that happiness isn't something you earn through struggle, but something you recognize in everyday moments of connection and beauty.
Your learning journey is entering a golden phase where everything clicks into place. Like Zeng Dian's spring gathering, your studies will become less about grinding through material and more about genuine enjoyment and connection. This stick suggests you're about to discover the joy in learning itself.
Maybe you'll find a study group that actually makes complex topics feel like conversations with friends. Or perhaps a subject you've been struggling with will suddenly make sense, like puzzle pieces falling together. The key insight here is collaborative learning — the "hand in hand" aspect.
Your biggest breakthroughs will come through discussion, sharing ideas, and learning alongside others rather than isolating yourself with books. Think of that student I met at HKU who was failing organic chemistry until she started explaining concepts to her roommate every night. Teaching others became her path to understanding.
Your current approach might be too serious, too pressured. This sign encourages you to bring some lightness back into learning. Join that study group.
Attend those optional seminars. Ask questions in class. The "spring gowns" represent fresh perspectives — be open to new ways of understanding familiar material.
Form or join a study group within the next two weeks. Schedule regular discussion sessions where you explain concepts to each other rather than just reviewing notes silently. Take your studying outside when weather permits — literally change your environment.
Sign up for at least one extracurricular academic activity this term, whether that's a debate club, research project, or guest lecture series. Most importantly, celebrate small wins along the way instead of waiting for major milestones.
