What Is BaZi? The Four Pillars of Destiny, Explained

BaZi (八字), also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese birth-chart system. It converts your birth year, month, day, and hour into four pairs of characters. Each pair contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, giving eight characters in total. Traditional readers interpret their relationships through the Five Elements and timing cycles.

Calculate your free BaZi chart to see your own Four Pillars and Day Master as you read. Have your birth date and birth time ready. The example below uses fictional birth details, with the calendar calculation checked against Hong Kong Observatory references.

BaZi at a glance

QuestionAnswer
What does the name mean?八字 (bā zì) means eight characters. 四柱 (sì zhù) means four pillars.
What are the four pillars?Year, month, day, and hour, each written as a stem-branch pair.
What information do I need?Birth date and hour. Birthplace matters when correcting clock time; traditional luck-cycle direction also uses gender.
What is the Day Master? The Heavenly Stem of the day pillar, used as the reference for the rest of the chart.
Which calendar does it use?The year changes at Li Chun, usually in early February. Month pillars change at twelve solar-term boundaries.

How BaZi works

The calendar supplies the characters. Interpretation assigns traditional meanings to their relationships. Keeping those two steps separate makes a chart easier to check.

The ten Heavenly Stems pair the Five Elements with yin or yang. For example, 庚 (Geng) is Yang Metal and 辛 (Xin) is Yin Metal. The twelve Earthly Branches are the same characters used for zodiac animals. A stem and branch advance together through a repeating sixty-pair cycle.

Your Day Master is the stem in the day column. The Ten Gods describe how the other stems relate to it through their elements and polarity. The names include Friend, Direct Wealth, and Direct Officer. They are labels within the traditional system; a Wealth label does not establish how much money someone will earn.

A reader also considers the birth season, hidden stems within the branches, and combinations or clashes. Ten-year luck pillars add a sequence of changing stem-branch pairs. Their direction and starting age require further calculations beyond the eight birth characters.

A complete Four Pillars example

Take a fictional birth on 15 June 1990 at 10 a.m. in Hong Kong, using the recorded local clock time. This example applies no true-solar-time correction. Gender is unnecessary for these four birth pillars; it becomes relevant when calculating the traditional luck-cycle direction.

YearMonthDayHour
Heavenly Stem庚 Geng壬 Ren辛 Xin癸 Gui
Earthly Branch午 Wu午 Wu亥 Hai巳 Si
Full pillar庚午 Geng-Wu壬午 Ren-Wu辛亥 Xin-Hai癸巳 Gui-Si
Stem elementYang MetalYang WaterYin MetalYin Water

The Day Master is 辛, Xin Metal, in the day column. The Horse appears twice because both the year and month branches are 午. The day branch is 亥, the Pig; the hour branch is 巳, the Snake.

1. Check the birth details and calendar rules

The date is after Li Chun and falls between Grain in Ear on 6 June and Slight Heat on 7 July in the Hong Kong Observatory's 1990 calendar. Those boundaries place it in a Wu month. The Observatory's stem and branch tables give Ren as the Wu-month stem in a Geng year. They also put 10 a.m. in the Si hour, with Gui as its stem on a Xin day.

We checked the day independently of our chart engine. The Observatory's November 2022 calendar marks 7 November as Jia-Zi. Counting back 11,833 calendar days to 15 June 1990 gives Xin-Hai in the same sixty-day cycle. This checks the characters in this example; it does not test the accuracy of a personal interpretation.

For your own chart, record whether you used clock time or true solar time. Births close to midnight, an hour change, or a solar-term boundary need particular care. Two calculators can disagree because they apply different time conventions. Our calculator comparison guide explains what to check first.

2. Find the Day Master and the season

Read the upper character of the day column first. Here it is Xin, Yin Metal. Then look at the month branch, Wu, which belongs to Fire in the traditional Five-Element system.

In that system, Fire controls Metal. A reader would therefore examine how the summer season affects this Xin Day Master, then look for support and other interactions across the whole chart. Simply counting two visible Metal stems and two Water stems would miss the seasonal weighting and the stems hidden in the branches.

3. Add relationships before making an interpretation

Compare the other visible stems with Xin. Geng is also Metal with the opposite polarity, giving the Ten God label Rob Wealth. Metal produces Water. Ren, Yang Water, is Hurting Officer relative to Xin; Gui, Yin Water, is Eating God.

Those names are the result of applying the element-and-polarity rules. Traditional readings connect them with themes such as peers and expression. What those themes mean for this fictional person remains interpretation. Neither the table nor the names establishes their occupation, income, or relationships.

What the four pillars represent in a reading

Traditional interpretations give each position a role. The year is associated with family background and early surroundings. The month supplies the seasonal context and is often considered when discussing work. The day stem represents the person, while the day branch is commonly read as the spouse position. The hour is associated with later life, children, and what a person produces.

These associations help readers organise a discussion. A pillar cannot establish what another person feels or guarantee an event. If you are comparing two charts, our BaZi compatibility guide explains how the comparison adds another layer. Symbolic stars, or Shen Sha, are additional markers derived from the same characters.

Is BaZi the same as the Chinese zodiac?

Your zodiac animal gives the branch of a year. BaZi uses the year together with the month, day, and hour. Two people born in the same Horse year can therefore have different Day Masters and hour pillars.

The year boundary also matters. Popular zodiac calendars often change the animal at Lunar New Year; the BaZi convention used here changes the year pillar at Li Chun. For a birth in January or early February, check the actual boundary before assuming that the zodiac animal determines the BaZi year pillar.

What can BaZi tell you?

BaZi offers a traditional framework for reflecting on personality, relationships, and timing. The calendar calculation can be checked against dates and explicit rules. Claims about a person's future require a different kind of evidence; a correctly calculated chart does not validate those claims.

Use an interpretation to ask questions you can compare with your experience. If a reading describes difficulty handling pressure, consider when that fits and when it does not. A birth chart alone cannot determine whether a relationship will succeed, whether an illness is present, or whether an investment will profit.

BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu

BaZi organises the birth moment into four pillars and reads element relationships. Zi Wei Dou Shu uses a lunar-calendar chart with twelve palaces, including Life, Career, and Wealth, populated by traditional stars. The same birth details feed two different structures.

Reading them together lets you compare how the traditions describe a subject. Agreement between them is not independent evidence that a prediction is true. Our BaZi and Zi Wei comparison shows the calendar and interpretation differences. You can also follow the worked example in how to read a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart.

Can ChatGPT work out your four pillars?

In our September 2026 chart check, we compared 60 archived AI responses to 12 fictional Hong Kong birth dates with our engine's Four Pillars. Web search was disabled. ChatGPT matched all four pillars in 6 of 12 English responses and 7 of 12 Chinese responses. Both Claude groups and the Chinese Gemini group had no complete matches.

The sample excluded Zi-hour and solar-term boundaries, and the comparison measured agreement with our archived engine output. The report includes the model versions, original answers and comparison method. To work with your own birth details, use the BaZi calculator first, check the birth time and calculation rules, then bring the calculated pillars into a chat for discussion.

Calendar sources

The Hong Kong Observatory references above support the calendar checks, stem-branch sequence, and hour table. The traditional interpretations are explained separately from those calculations. The 1990 conversion table gives that year's solar-term dates; the stem and branch reference supplies the pairing tables; the November 2022 calendar provides the dated anchor for our independent day-count check.

Frequently asked questions

What does BaZi mean in Chinese?

BaZi (八字) means eight characters. A birth year, month, day, and hour each contribute a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, forming four pillars of two characters each. It is also called the Four Pillars of Destiny.

How does BaZi work?

A calculator maps the birth date and hour to four stem-branch pairs using calendar rules. The stem of the day pillar is the Day Master. Traditional interpretation then compares the other characters with it through the Five Elements, Ten Gods, and timing cycles.

How accurate is BaZi analysis?

The four birth pillars can be checked against calendar sources once the time conventions are specified. A correct calculation does not establish that an interpretation can predict events. The example in this guide shows the calculation checks separately from the traditional reading.

Is BaZi the same as the Chinese zodiac?

The zodiac animal is one branch associated with a year. BaZi uses all four pillars, including month, day, and hour. The BaZi year convention used here also changes at Li Chun, which can differ from the Lunar New Year boundary used in popular zodiac calendars.

Can I read my BaZi without knowing my birth time?

A reader can work with the year, month, and day while leaving the hour unknown. That gives six characters and limits the reading. Near midnight, uncertainty about the birth time can also affect the day pillar. An estimated hour should be labelled as an estimate.

Is the BaZi calculator free?

The calculator gives you a free chart with your Four Pillars and Day Master. A complete BaZi and Zi Wei interpretation is available as a paid report. You can read the fictional sample report before buying.
