Lesson notes and examples
1. Locate the Four Pillars
Each year, month, day and hour pillar has a heavenly stem above an earthly branch. The example's month pillar is Ren-Wu; its day pillar is Xin-Hai.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heavenly stem | Geng 庚 | Ren 壬 | Xin 辛 | Jia 甲 |
| Earthly branch | Wu 午 | Wu 午 | Hai 亥 | Wu 午 |
2. Find the Day Master
The Day Master is the stem of the day pillar. Xin-Hai gives a Xin Metal Day Master; Hai is the day branch. This site leaves the hour pillar unavailable when the birth hour is unknown.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heavenly stem | Geng 庚 | Ren 壬 | Xin 辛 | Jia 甲 |
| Earthly branch | Wu 午 | Wu 午 | Hai 亥 | Wu 午 |
3. Stem Polarity and Elements
The stem pairs are Jia/Yi Wood, Bing/Ding Fire, Wu/Ji Earth, Geng/Xin Metal and Ren/Gui Water. The first stem in each pair is yang and the second yin. Metal generates Water.
4. Derive the Ten Gods
First compare the elements, then the polarity. Xin Metal generates Ren Water with opposite polarity, giving Hurting Officer. Xin controls Jia Wood with opposite polarity, giving Direct Wealth. Changing the Day Master changes the relationship.
| Stem | Ten God |
|---|---|
| 辛 | Peer (比肩) |
| 庚 | Rob Wealth (劫財) |
| 癸 | Eating God (食神) |
| 壬 | Hurting Officer (傷官) |
| 乙 | Indirect Wealth (偏財) |
| 甲 | Direct Wealth (正財) |
| 丁 | Seven Killings (七殺) |
| 丙 | Direct Officer (正官) |
| 己 | Indirect Resource (偏印) |
| 戊 | Direct Resource (正印) |
5. Month Branch and Hidden Stems
The month branch represents a solar-term month. Here it is Wu, whose hidden stems are Ding and Ji, with Ding Fire as the main qi. Assessing strength also requires roots, revealed stems and the whole chart's relationships.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heavenly stem | Geng 庚 | Ren 壬 | Xin 辛 | Jia 甲 |
| Earthly branch | Wu 午 | Wu 午 | Hai 亥 | Wu 午 |
6. Read within the Evidence
After identifying a Ten God, record its pillar, whether it is revealed and its roots. Direct Wealth names a relationship; that label alone cannot establish someone's income. Use the example for rules, then continue with the existing two lessons on your own chart.

Practice questions
Do I need to enter birth details?
These lessons use a fixed teaching chart without birth input. Afterwards, open the BaZi tool to check your own pillars and Day Master.
Does this course determine strength or useful elements?
The course teaches chart reading and classification, including why season, roots and hidden stems matter together. Useful-element selection requires a full chart and a stated method.
How do mistakes and reviews work?
Missed questions return at the end and become due in ten minutes. Correct answers move to review intervals of one, three, seven days and longer. First-answer accuracy keeps the original result. You can return to due questions after completing the course.
Can I continue in the other language?
Both languages share progress, first-answer results and review dates in this browser. A different device or cleared site data starts a new record. Practice is free and needs no account.
