These are the course's naming conventions; everyday writing counts can differ.
| Character | Full radical | Calculation | Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chen 陳 | 阜 | 8 + 8 | 16 |

1. Check Kangxi stroke counts
This site's stroke table is built primarily from the Kangxi radical data in Unihan 15.0. Add the full radical count to the residual strokes. Chen 陳 uses 阜, eight radical strokes plus eight residual strokes, giving sixteen. Jiang 江 uses 水, four plus three, giving seven. These are the course's naming conventions; everyday writing counts can differ.
| Character | Full radical | Calculation | Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chen 陳 | 阜 | 8 + 8 | 16 |
| Jiang 江 | 水 | 4 + 3 | 7 |
| Da 大 | 大 | 3 + 0 | 3 |
| Wen 文 | 文 | 4 + 0 | 4 |
2. Calculate Five Grids for Chen Da-Wen
The teaching name Chen Da-Wen has surname Chen 陳 and given name Da-Wen 大文, with counts 16, 3 and 4. For this single-character surname, Heaven is 16 plus a virtual 1, giving 17. Person adds the surname's last character to the given name's first, giving 19. Earth sums the two given-name characters, giving 7. Outer is virtual 1 plus the final given-name character, giving 5. Total sums the actual characters, giving 23; virtual strokes are excluded.
| Grid | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Heaven | 16 + 1 | 17 |
| Person | 16 + 3 | 19 |
| Earth | 3 + 4 | 7 |
| Outer | 1 + 4 | 5 |
| Total | 16 + 3 + 4 | 23 |
3. Adjust for single names and compound surnames
The course covers surnames and given names of one or two characters. Outer uses the outside contribution from the surname plus that from the given name. Use virtual 1 for a single-character surname, or the first surname character for a compound surname. Use virtual 1 for a single given name, or its final character for a two-character given name. Wang Wen 王文 has Outer 1 plus 1, giving 2. Ouyang Wen 歐陽文 has Outer 15 for 歐 plus 1, giving 16. Separate surname from given name before choosing the formula.
| Teaching name | Surname | Given name | Outer |
|---|---|---|---|
4. Read Three Talents from the final digits
Each grid's final digit gives its element. Digits 1 and 2 are Wood; 3 and 4 Fire; 5 and 6 Earth; 7 and 8 Metal; 9 and 0 Water. Three Talents uses Heaven, Person and Earth, in that order. Chen Da-Wen's 17, 19 and 7 become Metal, Water and Metal. These elements come from grid numbers. Character meaning and shape use separate classification methods.
| Grid | Number | Final digit | Element |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heaven | 17 | 7 | Metal |
| Person | 19 | 9 | Water |
| Earth | 7 | 7 | Metal |
5. Check conventions when results differ
The site's default count for 王 is four, with an alternative convention of five explicitly marked. Wang Wen has Heaven 5 under the default; changing 王 to five makes Heaven 6 and recalculates affected grids. Simplified input is normalized to Traditional using the site's mapping before lookup. The site's 81-number table retains 81, then subtracts 80 while a number exceeds 81, so 82 looks up 2. Compare character forms, stroke counts and table versions before comparing ratings. Ratings do not guarantee life outcomes.
| Count for 王 | Heaven | Person | Earth | Outer | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4, site default | 5 | 8 | 5 | 2 | 8 |
| 5, alternative | 6 | 9 | 5 | 2 | 9 |

Practice questions
How should I check naming stroke counts?
First confirm the character form and counting convention. The course uses the site's Kangxi table, with 陳 at 16 and 江 at 7. Documented alternative counts can be selected for disputed characters.
How do Five Grids relate to Three Talents?
Five Grids are Heaven, Earth, Person, Outer and Total numbers. Three Talents converts Heaven, Person and Earth to elements using their final digits, then keeps that order.
Can the English course calculate an English name?
The method uses Chinese characters. The English course explains the same rules. Its linked calculator has a Chinese interface and accepts surnames and given names of one or two Chinese characters.
How do mistakes and reviews work?
Missed questions return at the end and become due in ten minutes. Correct answers move to review intervals of one, three, seven days and longer. First-answer accuracy keeps the original result. You can return to due questions after completing the course.
Can I continue in the other language?
Both languages share progress, first-answer results and review dates in this browser. A different device or cleared site data starts a new record. Practice is free and needs no account.
