Four hundred years ago a man named Yuan Liaofan had his whole life read out to him: the rank he would place in each exam, the post he would hold, the year he would die, that he would have no son. It all came true, so he stopped trying. Why push, when the ledger is already written.

Then he met the Chan master Yungu. Yungu did not say the reading was wrong. He said it was accurate about the track Liaofan was on, and the track was his own to walk, so it was his to change. Liaofan began keeping a daily record of what he did and left undone. He outlived the year he had been given, and he had a son.

Drawing a fortune stick has run along the same line for six hundred years. The stick does not fix your days in place. It reads the hand you are holding right now, clearly, so you can see it. What you do next stays in your hands. That is what 以籤觀心 means: read your own mind through the sign.

Six hundred years ago, drawing a stick was a tool for self-cultivation. The idea is plain: thoughts become actions, actions become habits, habits become character, and character becomes a life.
