How We Read Sticks and Build Charts

Four hundred years ago a man named Yuan Liaofan had his whole life read out to him: the rank he would place in each exam, the post he would hold, the year he would die, that he would have no son. It all came true, so he stopped trying. Why push, when the ledger is already written.

Then he met the Chan master Yungu. Yungu did not say the reading was wrong. He said it was accurate about the track Liaofan was on, and the track was his own to walk, so it was his to change. Liaofan began keeping a daily record of what he did and left undone. He outlived the year he had been given, and he had a son.

Drawing a fortune stick has run along the same line for six hundred years. The stick does not fix your days in place. It reads the hand you are holding right now, clearly, so you can see it. What you do next stays in your hands. That is what 以籤觀心 means: read your own mind through the sign.

Six hundred years ago, drawing a stick was a tool for self-cultivation. The idea is plain: thoughts become actions, actions become habits, habits become character, and character becomes a life. Fate is not something read out to you. It compounds, one thought at a time. What a stick can show you is the first link in that chain: the thought you are holding right now.

That is why this site works in layers. The free reading helps you understand the verse, so the thing you asked about has a frame. The deep reading helps you understand yourself: the same stick, brought down to the exact thing you are stuck on, and why. The last layer is a habit: decide what you will do, come back after you have done it, and check the answer against what actually happened. Not whether the stick was right. Whether you walked.

Each stick has a base interpretation written in advance as static content. Anyone can read that basic explanation for free.

Each of the hundred sticks has the same chance of being drawn. In September 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to draw sticks with web search off. All three leaned on a handful of numbers, and in 87 draws none of them wrote a line of verse that matches the temple booklet. The test is written up in Chinese fortune sticks online.

Zi Wei charts are calculated by iztro, an open-source charting engine based on astronomical calendar rules. The same birth time always produces the same chart.

You can check the result against a traditional astrology book or another charting tool. General AI chatbots can build a chart when asked, and whether it is right depends on the model. On twelve Hong Kong birth times asked in English, ChatGPT got all four pillars right six times and Claude declined nine times. The day pillar was the one most often wrong. That is why we use deterministic calculation.

AI has one job: take the fixed stick text or computed chart, then generate a personalized reading from the situation you entered. It does not change the stick text or the chart.

We do not judge life and death, give gambling tips, or promise to predict the future. A stick text is a mirror: it reflects your present situation and concerns. The decision remains in your hands.

We never call a sign accurate, and we never say one can turn your luck around. Accuracy is not a claim the temple elders make either. What a sign does is show you the hand you are holding. Where you take it from there is yours.

Casting jiaobei blocks is free and always will be, and we do not ask you for money at the moment the answer is no. In July 2026 we tried selling a reading after the blocks landed, and pulled it five days later. Someone who has just been turned down is not someone to sell to. Payment now happens only at the start, while you are still working out what to ask, before anything is cast.

If you come back weeks later and tell us you did not do the thing, we will not use that to sell you another reading. Not doing it is recorded as not doing it. Prices also stay out of the navigation bar, so you have to go looking for them.

We do not take gambling questions. Lottery numbers, horses, any framing that treats a sign as a way to pick a winner, none of that belongs here.

There is no cartoon mascot, and we do not hide behind vocabulary. Four Pillars, palaces, chart patterns: we compute those in the back end and then say what they mean in plain English. A reading you cannot follow is not deep, it is badly written.
