The six lessons
Find the palaces
South is at the top and north at the bottom. Find each palace by its direction and element.
Find the gates
Each gate occupies an outer palace. Start with the Open Gate and Life Gate.
Find the stars
The stars rotate with the sky plate. Center Bird travels with Ailment, while the center retains its Bird marker.
Find the gods
Eight gods occupy the outer palaces. Distinguish the Duty Chief god from the Duty Chief star.
Chief and Envoy
The Duty Chief star follows the hour stem. The Duty Envoy gate advances by elapsed hours. They may occupy different palaces.
Check the earth plate
Wu starts in the palace given by the arrangement number. Stems follow palace numbers forward for Yang and backward for Yin.
Check the worked chart
This Geng Yin day and Xin Si hour falls in the lower period of Minor Heat, with a Yin 5 arrangement. Jia Xu leads the ten-hour cycle, with Ji as its substitute stem. The Chief star is Counsel in palace 2; the Envoy is Block Gate in palace 6. South is at the top, north at the bottom.
The site uses the hour-chart rotating method with intercalation and centre lodging in Kun. The step view follows the earth plate, cycle leader, Chief and Envoy. Solar term and chart number come from the site's precomputed data. Other schools may set the chart number or handle centre lodging differently; use the same method when checking another chart.

Try a current chart
After practising with this example, cast a Qi Men chart for the current hour. Check its header, then select palaces to read their gates, stars and gods. The question exercises can help you choose what to ask.
Questions before and after practice
What can I practise here?
Six lessons have two questions each. Locate palace directions, gates, stars, gods, the Duty Chief star, Duty Envoy gate and earth stems. Start with the worked chart, then select a palace. Missed questions return at the end of the session.
Which moment does the worked chart use?
15 July 2026 at 09:00 Hong Kong time, UTC+8. It is the Geng Yin day and Xin Si hour, in the lower period of Minor Heat, with a Yin 5 arrangement. The site uses the hour-chart rotating method with intercalation and centre lodging in Kun.
How do the Duty Chief god and Duty Chief star differ?
The Duty Chief god is one of the eight gods. The Chief star is the leading star for this chart, here Counsel in palace 2. Both occupy palace 2 in this example. View the gods and Chief/Envoy layers separately. The Envoy is Block Gate in palace 6.
Can I use this fixed chart for a current question?
This chart teaches the symbols and positions for one recorded moment. For a current matter, cast a new chart on the Qi Men tool page, choose the symbols relevant to your question, and read their whole palaces.
