Full readingEndless illusion is the dream for wealth and fame; Years of prosperity are nothing but a false game.
The fruit of success is hardly ripe to reap; One will mourn lost glory after waking up from sleep.
This stick references the famous Han Dynasty story of Lu Sheng, a young scholar who fell asleep at an inn in Handan while waiting for his millet porridge to cook. In his dream, he lived an entire lifetime — married a beautiful woman, became a high official, accumulated vast wealth, and enjoyed decades of glory. When he woke up, the millet was still cooking.
The innkeeper smiled and said, "Your whole life of riches was just a dream." This became known as the "Handan Dream," one of China's most enduring tales about the illusory nature of worldly success. The story warns against chasing empty promises and reminds us that what seems permanent often vanishes like morning mist.
For centuries, Chinese people have used this tale to question whether their pursuits are real treasures or just beautiful dreams.
Your romantic life might be built on fantasies rather than solid ground. That person you're idealizing? The relationship you think is perfect? This stick suggests you're living in a beautiful dream that doesn't match reality. Maybe you've fallen for someone's charm without seeing their true character. Or perhaps you're so focused on how a relationship looks from the outside that you're missing red flags.
I once knew someone who was convinced their long-distance partner was "the one" based on perfect video calls and romantic messages. Six months later, they discovered the person had been presenting a completely fabricated version of themselves. The heartbreak was devastating because they'd built their entire emotional future on an illusion.
This doesn't mean your feelings aren't real — they absolutely are. But the object of those feelings might not be what you think. Are you chasing someone who gives you mixed signals? Staying in a relationship because you love the idea of them more than who they actually are? The stick warns that what feels like treasure now could leave you empty-handed when you "wake up" and see clearly.
Step back from romantic fantasies and ground yourself in facts. Have real conversations about future plans, values, and deal-breakers instead of just enjoying the butterflies. If someone's actions don't match their words, believe the actions.
Take time apart from the person you're interested in to see if your feelings hold up without constant contact. Ask trusted friends for their honest opinion about your situation — sometimes outsiders see what we can't.
