How are the 24 solar terms calculated?

A solar term begins at the moment the sun's apparent ecliptic longitude reaches a multiple of 15 degrees, so the full circle holds 24 of them. Chunfen, the spring equinox, is at 0 degrees, Qingming at 15, Dongzhi, the winter solstice, at 270 and Lichun at 315. The Hong Kong Observatory explains the terms the same way.

The Gregorian year and the sun's cycle do not line up exactly, so a term can shift by a day from one year to the next. The times here are computed from the sun's longitude and rounded to the minute, and all 48 times for 2026 and 2027 match the table the Hong Kong Observatory publishes.

What is the difference between jie and zhongqi?

The 24 terms alternate between two kinds. The 12 zhongqi (中氣) sit at multiples of 30 degrees and include both equinoxes and both solstices. The 12 jie (節) fall halfway between them, starting with Lichun, and each one opens a month of the solar calendar that BaZi uses. The Hong Kong Observatory calls the zhongqi major solar terms and the jie minor ones.

The lunar calendar uses the zhongqi to place its leap months. Every lunar month must contain a zhongqi, and a month without one becomes a leap month.

Why do BaZi months follow the solar terms?

In BaZi, the Four Pillars, the month pillar changes at each of the 12 jie, not on the first day of a lunar month. The stretch from Hanlu to Lidong is the Xu (戌) month, and the Hai (亥) month starts at Lidong. In 2026, Lidong (Start of Winter) falls on 7 November at 17:52 UTC+8, and the month pillar turns from 戊戌 (Wu Xu) to 己亥 (Ji Hai) at that minute.

The year pillar changes at Lichun. In 2027 Lichun falls on 4 February at 09:46 UTC+8, and the 丁未 (Ding Wei) year begins then, two days before Lunar New Year on 6 February. A birth close to Lichun can land on either side of it, which is why a BaZi chart needs the birth hour.

When is Dongzhi in 2026?

Dongzhi, the winter solstice festival, falls on 22 December 2026 in UTC+8. The astronomical solstice comes at 04:50 UTC+8, which is 20:50 UTC on 21 December. See the Dongzhi festival guide for more on the day.
